Ankylosing spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis can be painful. If you suspect your everyday comfort and activities are being limited due to ankylosing spondylitis, then the doctors at Twin Cities Spine Center are here to help.

Our spine specialists have been treating patients with this disorder for 70-plus years. We have the extensive knowledge, experience and facilities needed to manage this and other types of spinal deformities.

Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis of the spine. This inflammation can eventually cause the bones in the spine to fuse together, creating a stiff, hunched forward posture and discomfort.

If you have ankylosing spondylitis, the pain often begins in your thoracic spine (the middle of your back). But it can progress to involve your full spine. Typical symptoms include:

  • A straightening of the lumbar spine (lower back)
  • Forward curvature of the thoracic spine
  • Curvature in the neck and even trouble holding the head up or "dropped head syndrome"

Ankylosing spondylitis can also cause redness, heat, swelling and pain in the spine. You may find that it affects other joints in your body, such as the shoulders, ribs, hips and knees.

Ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis and treatment

To diagnose ankylosing spondylitis, one of our spine specialists will perform a thorough physical exam. Your specialist may also order full-length and local x-rays and a blood sample to see if you have a genetic predisposition for ankylosing spondylitis.

Twin Cities Spine Center looks at every possible nonsurgical treatment to help manage your ankylosing spondylitis before considering surgery. Our spine doctors work closely with experienced rheumatologists and physical therapists to create the best possible treatment plan. Options typically include medications and physical therapy.

In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to realign the spine. Twin Cities Spine Center prides itself on its expert team of spinal surgeons who treat ankylosing spondylitis and all other spinal deformities.

No matter what your diagnosis turns out to be, you can be confident that your care is in highly experienced hands. Our spine doctors will help you understand your condition and decide on a treatment plan that fits your goals and lifestyle.
