Full Description:
In a time of evidence-based medicine, surgeons, especially ones that are performing new techniques, need to critically evaluate their patients and results. This helps the surgeon understand his or her possible areas for improvement and also may give insight to other surgeons who are considering a newer technique. We believe that this research can accomplish both.
The first extreme lateral interbody fusion was performed in our institution in July of 2006. Since then, over 200 have been done. We will retrospectively review our results of those cases. We will specifically evaluate age, medical history, smoking history, BMI, length of surgery, length of hospital stay, estimated blood loss, pre- and post operative Oswestry scores, fusion status and complications. We will also attempt to evaluate the learning curve, if any, by comparing the data from the first one hundred cases versus the next one hundred cases.
