Full Description:
All patients with a diagnosis of congenital spinal deformity of any type will be reviewed. This will include all patients from Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare and the Twin Cities Spine Center from January 1, 1950 through December 30, 2009. Scoliosis cases will be included if the curve apex is in the cervical spine, or at the cervicothoracic juntction, or if the congenital problem is dwarfs or other syndromic conditions such as Larsen's disease, Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, Diastrophic dysplasia, Hurler's syndrome, etc.
Methods: All medical records that would fall under the above criteria will be reviewed, including hospital charts, photographs, clinical charts, and radiological imaging. The method of treatment, the results of that treatment, and any complications related to that treatment will be analyzed. Periodic observation without active intervention will be considered a method of treatment.
Results: Results will be determined on the basis of whether that treatment did or did not successfully addresss the presenting problem or problems. Any complications of that treatment will be duly recorded. We anticipate at least three manuscripts to be developed; one regarding classification and natural history, one regarding non-operative treatment, and one on surgical treatment.
