Purpose:
The extension of the brace or the cast to include one thigh (usually) is to help decrease meovement of the pelvis and the lumbosacral area of the spine.
The extension is to limit motion when walking. Your will need to take small steps. As there is increased stress on this lower portion of the spine when sitting, sitting will be eliminated or decreased.
Sitting in a reclined position (leaning back) will be necessary or recommended to decrease stress on the lower spine.
Recommendations:
Lying down, standing, or walking are recommended.
Concerns:
You are not to drive a car with the thigh extension. Getting into car with a fixed leg extension can be difficult. You may need to practice getting in and out of a car.
Hint: A van or large car works the best.
You will want to sit at times. If you have an adjustable extension, sit for short (15-20 minute) intervals. Without an adjustable extension, you may need to be lying down, and may be unable to sit at all.
Another means of sitting is actually semi-sitting; resting one buttock on a high counter or stool. This is not as stressful as sitting, or as tiring as standing.
Toileting:
Sitting on a regular toilet may be impossible. A raised seat may be necessary and the use of this seat will be evaluated before you leave the hospital.
Dressing and Bathing:
These activities will be modified with the basic methods described for the care of the cast or brace. Evaluation of your needs will be done by your spine nurse and occupational therapist.
