Purpose:
A CTLSO (Milwaukee brace) is used for stabilization and treatment of patients with scoliosis or kyphosis.
Brace Fit:
The CTLSO is designed so your spine will be supported from your neck to your tailbone. The neck ring should not inhibit your head or chin from moving.
T-Shirt:
Wear a snug fitting T-shirt under brace at all times. Application of alcohol or witch hazel to bony areas will help toughen your skin to prevent skin problems.
Application and Removal of Brace:
Instructions will be given regarding how and when to apply and remove the brace. It may be necessary to have help when applying and removing your brace at first, but with time and practice, brace wearers can learn to do this alone.
Readjustments:
Adjustments may be needed as you grow and your body changes.
Care of Your Brace:
- Wash the plastic areas of the brace daily with mild soap and warm water.
- The different pads, straps, and metal uprights should be wiped clean with a damp cloth (do no immerse these pads in water).
- Allow the brace to dry thoroughly before wearing again.
- Keep the brace strapped together, when not being worn, to keep its shape.
- Keep the brace away from extreme heat and cold.
- Frequently check the brace for damaged or worn parts.
Clothing:
Loose fitting top and jeans (one size larger) or sweat pants are most comfortable. Underpants are worn over brace (bikini-style may be worn under brace).
Questions/Problems:
Contact the Orthotics Department or your physician's office.
